Donald Woods es un periodista blanco y liberal que empieza a seguir las actividades de Stephen Biko, un activista negro antiapartheid, en un momento clave de la historia del país. Donald conoce a Stephen y se hacen amigos hasta que éste es brutalmente asesinado en 1977, a manos de la policía. Afligido por la muerte de su amigo, Donald decide dar a conocer la verdad sobre su vida y su muerte. Sin embargo, tanto él como su familia deberán pagar un precio muy alto que significó abandonar todo aquello que amaban.
