Ambientada en los años 60 y 70. Effie, Deena y Lorrell forman un prometedor grupo musical llamado The Dreamettes. El ambicioso agente Curtis Taylor (Jamie Foxx) las descubre durante un concurso y les ofrece la oportunidad de su vida: hacer los coros para el famosísimo James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Poco a poco, Curtis empieza a controlar el aspecto físico y la música de las chicas para acabar lanzándolas como The Dreams. Pero los focos no tardan en centrarse en Deena, olvidando e incluso apartando a la menos atractiva Effie. A pesar de que The Dreams se convierte en un auténtico fenómeno de costa a costa, no tardan en darse cuenta de que el precio de la fama y de la fortuna es mucho más elevado de lo que imaginaban.
