Tras sufrir la pérdida de su hijo, el sheriff jubilado George Blackledge (Costner) y su mujer Margaret (Lane) dejan su rancho en Montana para tratar de rescatar a su nieto en Dakota. El niño está bajo la tutela de la poderosa familia Weboy, pues la nuera se ha vuelto a casar con otro hombre. La matriarca Blanche Weboy, tras descubrir las intenciones de los Blackledge, decide hacer todo lo posible para impedir que el niño regrese con sus abuelos.
