Graham Hess (Mel Gibson) es un pastor protestante que vive con sus dos hijos (Rory Culkin y Abigail Breslin) y con su hermano Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix), una antigua estrella del béisbol que trabaja en una gasolinera.
